The Savage

by David Amond, illustrated by Dave McKean - £6.99  Walker Books Ltd (2009)
paperback    ISBN 13: 9781406319859 | ISBN 10: 1406319856

"There was a wild kid living in Burgess Woods. He had no famly and he had no pals and he didn't know where he came from and he culdn't talk. His wepons were old kitchen nives and forks and an ax. He was savage. He was truely wild."

Blue Baker is writing a story - not all that stuff about wizards and fairies and happily ever after - a real story, about blood and guts and adventures, because that's what life's really like. At least it is for Blue, since his Dad died and Hopper the town bully started knocking him and the other kids about.

But Blue's story has a life of its own - weird and wild and dark - and when the savage pays a night-time visit to Hopper, Blue starts to wonder where he ends and the savage begins.

An extraordinary graphic novel within a novel.

"David Almond's books are strange, unsettling wild things - unfettered by the normal constraints of children's literature."
(Guardian)
"McKean's work has all the qualities of a real universe - sprawling yet contained, chaotic yet organized, mysterious yet discernable, comedic yet serious."
(Time Magazine)
